1 simple thing to enhance arousal and orgasm

The simple and sneaky exercise called a “kegel” is a key player in sexual arousal and orgasm enhancement.

In 1948, Dr. Arnold Kegel, a California gynecologist, developed a treatment for urinary incontinence that is known today simply as a “kegel.”  This treatment involves the contraction and relaxation of the three layers of pelvic floor muscles (see this anatomy chart).

For step-by-step instructions see this link to the mayo clinic.

There are several muscles involved when performing this contraction exercise.  With practice, the different muscles can be isolated.  It is the same technique as when the muscle to raise just one eyebrow is isolated.

In addition to helping treat female urinary incontinence, kegel’s are shown to improve vaginismus.  This 2011 case study supports the theory that the magic kegel benefits women suffering from vaginismus.  (Vaginismus is unwanted and painful recurrent spasms “of the musculature of the outer third of the vagina, which interferes with coitus and causes distress and interpersonal difficulty.”)

The Sexual Addendum

In 1952, Dr. Kegel added an addendum to his findings.  Sexual satisfaction increased for both men and women by doing these contractions of love.  For women, their ability to orgasm increased and the intensity of the orgasm increased.  For men, kegel’s helped delay the climactic moment for those suffering from pre-mature ejaculation.

In a 1985 study, kegel calisthenics again showed increase in women’s sexual arousal.  “When combined with self-generated fantasy, tensing further augmented arousal,” (Messe, M.R., Geer, J.H., 1985).  So, while you are doing your invisible love contractions think of a time when you and your husband had a steamy rendezvous.  It will help get you in the mood!

This 2010 study supports the fact that kegel’s can improve the intensity of your orgasm.

So, why do kegels help you get in the mood so quickly?

Here are 3 reasons.

Contraction of the pelvic floor muscles stimulates blood flow.

Blood flow in female pelvic region

Blood is essential for sexual pleasure because it causes the erectile tissue in our ladyparts to swell.  This swelling produces nice, really nice, sensations.  If you’ve ever been stung by a bee or bitten by a red fire ant you are aware of how painfully sensitive swollen tissue can be.  The erectile tissue in our ladyparts produces swelling but it is a sweet swelling.  It creates the ache of intense desire and allows a lighter touch to be magnified.  That is why stimulating blood flow is so important.  (See my other post about female erectile tissue here.)

Contraction of the pelvic floor muscles massages the pelvic floor nerves.

Female Pelvic Nerve Supply

The dorsal nerve branches off from the pudendal nerve to connect with the clitoris.  The deep perineal nerve branches off from the pudendal nerve to connect with the lower portion of the vagina.  The upper portion of the vagina is connected to different nerves, the inferior hypogastic plexis and the pelvic splanchnic nerve.  These nerves travel through the pelvic floor muscles.  You are firing up these nerves when you do kegel contractions.

(Fun side note:  These different nerves represent the different ‘types’ of orgasms.  Not all orgasms feel alike because they come from these different nerves.)

Contraction of the pelvic floor muscles mimics orgasm.

Have you ever heard the term ‘fake it, til you make it?’  Well, I don’t suggest faking orgasms!  What I suggest is that contracting the pelvic floor muscles is ‘faking’ or practicing orgasmic contractions.  Just like lunges help grow your quadricep muscle in your leg.  If you strengthen the pelvic floor muscles through kegels, your orgasm muscles (the pelvic floor muscles) will be stronger and will contract with greater strength. Contracting muscles that have greater strength or intensity will increase the richness of your orgasm.  Strong pelvic floor muscles = strong orgasm muscles = strong rhythmic contractions during orgasm= greater satisfaction.

Final Thoughts

The evidence is astounding for the simple kegel.  They are silent and deadly arousing!  Kegels can help you “turn on.”  The caveat is your brain and heart need to be in the game.  If you are experiencing stress or emotional upheaval, first do calming exercises or take a hot bath to relax.

It’s my opinion, that the blood flow and nerve massage produce near immediate results to help your nether regions feel steamy.  To clarify, this arousal probably isn’t going to be an immediate hair tossing heat.  This will be a gentle warmth that helps you go from, “not feeling it,” to, “that sounds nice.”  However, it will take several weeks to build the strength of your muscles to improve the Big Moment (orgasm).

If you have trouble remembering to flex your love muscle, there’s an app for that!  Search your app store for Kegel prompters.  Or, just set an alarm on your phone several times a day and squeeze to please.
